The Pinball Asylum / RESULTS & THANKS: 4th Annual Pinball Asylum Pin-Brawl Tournament
« Last post by doghouse on October 09, 2017, 03:05:32 PM »
Thank you for participating this last Saturday in our 4th Annual Pin-Brawl event!  WE had a GREAT Time, and hope you did as well!

A few cancellations at the last minute, and this year's match saw a still respectable 20 players, representing 10 teams. Team match-ups were very even (if we do say so ourselves), with the composite scores all falling between 65 and 85 points.

BIG TIME CONGRATS to the Winners-- TEAM TODDLEE-- with Lee Moscaritolo and Todd Baxter. Both of these guys played very well throughout the day, but really nailed it in the finals where they beat out some great teams to take home the big prize.  In addition to some handsome trophies, TEAM TODDLEE will also get their names inscribed on the "Asylum PLAQUE OF PIN-BRAWL CHAMPIONS," which shall hang on our wall as long as The Pinball Asylum is standing.

Each one of the teams played each other one time, and after five rounds, 7.5 hours, and 15 matches on 15 machines, the top qualifiers were, in order, THE CHERRYBUSTERS, OUTLANES, TODDLEE, PLUNGERS, SILVERBALLERS, and SALT & HOT PEPPER. Top qualifier, THE CHERRYBUSTERS remarkably grabbed five out of six of the bonus points in the final round.

There were 30 games available, and players got to choose the games (or play position) each round (one EM, one SS, and one DMD). Games choice and play positions for the first round of play was done by coin toss, and subsequent rounds first choice was given to highest seed (i.e. best composite score) going into that round. Composite scores were calculated based on the PAPA 4, 3, 2, 1 method.

Since players got to choose the games they played, the play distribution is interesting to look at, with some games receiving zero plays. (Of course the always popular Interflip DRAGON won with 8 total plays!)

Games and number of times played:
BON VOYAGE (1), CHERRY BELL (6), DRAGON (8), CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (3), AIR ACES (3), MONTE CARLO (0), MARS TREK (4), TRAVEL TIME (0), FAN-TAS-TIK (2),4-MILLION BC (3), AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2), ALGAR (3), POKERINO (0), ECLIPSE (4), TIME FANTASY (5), VOLTAN (2), DEVIL’S DARE (5), HEAVY METAL (5), BLACK SHEEP (4), SPACE RIDERS (0), JOHNNY MNEMONIC (0), FISH TALES (4), CONGO (3), SOPRANOS (6), AVATAR LE (1), GETAWAY (4), POPEYE (2), FRANKENSTEIN (6), BLACK ROSE (1), STAR TREK 25TH (3).

The last round of play-- i.e. Round 5-- carried three (3) guarantied bonus points for the highest combined game scores (i.e. adding each team's scores together), and the possibility of an additional three more for high game of the match on any game played in the final round.  Strategically, players looked for games with low or no gameplay to try and capture a high game score (and an extra point), and four players succeeded-- Gwen Austin on Voltan Escapes Cosmic Doom, Scott Bratton on Avatar LE, Matt Malone on Black Rose, and John Stone on Algar.

The final list of winners taking home trophies were: THE CHERRYBUSTERS 4th Place (Matt Malone & John Stone), SILVERBALLERS 3rd Place (Erik Wallis & Larry Hendricks), SALT & HOT PEPPER 2nd Place (David Paz & Tatiana Mora), and winners TODDLEE (Lee Moscaritolo and Todd Baxter).

And in case you were wondering, our NEXT EVENT is our Friday-Saturday, December 8th-9th Three-Strikes Bonanza for IFPA points.  Stand-by for more details soon!

Best,
David (and Matt B., Mike, Matt M., and Jeff)

For Sale or Trade / FS or possible FT: TFLE Decepticon Version
« Last post by pinballcorpse on October 09, 2017, 01:06:08 PM »
Selling my TFLE Decepticons Version

The basics:

Game is HUO (original owner).  Cash sale only price is $5000. Trades for older games considered (see below)

Located near Coral Springs, FL

Prefer local cash and carry sale.  If you must ship, I would recommend contacting Greywolf (Donny)

----------------

More details:

2 for one trades or single game plus cash considered for games such as Gottlieb 2" flipper games (Drop a Card, Hurdy Gurdy, Sweethearts, Crosstown, others?) or Solid State Games such as (Gorgar, Flash Gordon, Quicksilver, others?) Games should be in nice condition, BUT NO PROJECTS. I have no time. Open to offers, but I am looking for older games.

I am the original owner since 2011. Game is HUO and is in very good condition.  It has some decal wrinkles on the cabinet near the legs. (Very typical).

(Not going to try and claim collector quality, not a speck of dirt, less than 100 plays or any nonsense like that). I don't think you would be disappointed with this game unless you are the type of person who only turns on games to show guests all the LED mods installed and prove to them that the game still has all of the factory high scores because nobody is allowed to play it.  It's a nice HUO game.

Celebrity endorsement : every Florida State Pinball Champion and Point Monsters Champion has played it!

Mods: Game has Megatron anti-airball protector and shooter lane protector installed. Includes extra Optimus Prime Bash toy. Came with Shaker motor.

Goody bag and manual still stapled to inside? Um, no.  It's been read a few times.

Shooter lane and Megatron scoop wear disclaimer:  After almost 6 years who would dare say "no wear"  (But you said it has a protector!) Seriously?

Playfield dimple disclaimer:  I play the games, and some of them last a long time. I'm pretty sure you will find a dimple or 2.

Clearcoat ghosting: Wasn't really an issue back then to my knowledge, but come see it in person and satisfy yourself that the playfield is ok.

If you've read this far and are serious about buying and want specific photos, ask.  I think enough people can figure out via Google images or ipdb.org what the game looks like without me needing to post a bunch of photos on this site.

Feel free to PM me or direct email ( pinballcorpse at yahoo dot com ) and come by and see it in and play it person.  That way you KNOW what you are getting.

Thanks for reading!

I see Eric is up to 14th overall in the rankings.  This is amazing to me and it also kind of puts to bed a theory I have heard that the rankings and the IFPA rules in general are slanted to benefit the "pros" and keep the rest of us down.

It still holds water, to some extent.  While one only needs 20 tourneys for a full ranking, the reality of the WPPR is that being the most skilled isn't enough to be highly ranked... one has to do all the travel required to attend the big tourneys to maximize points.  Those who don't commit to travel will be kept down.  ;D

I think it is a given in any sport that you have to travel to compete against the best if you want to be in the top of the world rankings.  Without traveling a player can prove he is the best in his state, which is quite an honor on its own.  At that point obviously you have to get to the big tournaments to get into the top player ranking.  I don't see that at all as being held down by the system at all.  Someone could set records on every golf course in Florida, but you can't be king of the hill unless you compete in the US Open, Masters, etc to see how you perform in competition with the best of the best.

Basically to have a chance to move up high (top 25) in the IFPA ranking one has to be willing to travel to locations where 1) Many ranked people are playing in the tournament (ie not provisional) and 2) the tournament has to have a high TGP.  And of course the player needs to perform well to earn the points.

The IFPA top 25 threshold is currently 588 points which is an average of about 29.4 points per event over 20 events.  The only event in Florida that can generate those values is FPF, and to reach that average a player needs to place in the top 4. (Even 4th in 2016 was only 24 points).

For the HUGE events, top 20 at PAPA would earn about 30 points and top 24 at Pinburgh would earn about 30 points, just considering the 29.4 point average.

So yes, Eric has been busy traveling to big events AND doing well.

For Sale or Trade / Craigslist Head Up Be Careful
« Last post by John I on September 21, 2017, 09:51:31 PM »
Looking at my normal Craigslist search recently I found that much to my dismay, the local overpriced retail pinball seller is now advertising on CL Space Coast.  The contact information in the ads is for: Roberto or Sean.  This is Sun Fun Amusements.  They are by no means a scam, but their games are always overpriced and they charge TONS of money for shoddy repair work once you buy the game.  I suggest people contact Kurt from Raw Power/Pinball Lounge if you want a full service pinball retailer at a reasonable price.

Here are a couple of examples:

$3000 Pinbot:
