Gamewarp 2013 !!
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:50:45 AM »
Wow what a weekend... just getting back to normal after playing catchup with phone calls and emails yesterday...

I love the mix of vid/pins, so Gamewarp and APE are really my favorite shows.  It was great to see everyone, to see the Kong Off gang again, compete against all my buddies, etc.

Thanks to Hamster for not only working on Screw Loose and getting it 100% but for slaving over all the tech duties all weekend!      Thanks to Donny for running another awesome tourney!!

I was proud of the St Augustine crew's performance in the tourney.   All those guys compete because they started playing pinball, or started playing again, at my place.   Our tiny little historic town represented, though not as well as I would've liked.   With 3 of us in the round of 8, I really wanted to dominate the final 4.   My 82000 on Sinbad to Maka's 89000 or my 1.4B on JB to Maka's 2.1....either one of those go my way and I'm in....  so frustrating to be that close!   Joe G went out in the same position.  Danny of course took 2nd, while napping through the rounds and literally having to be nudged awake to go play his ball (and walking to the wrong machine and trying to plunge, no less!)... we will have a laugh about that for awhile!   Danny is just a great relaxed natural player.... I don't think it's possible to play any more relaxed than that!   Eric C represented well in only his second tourney, and knows he needs to improve on some of the older machines.   Congrats to Jeff for rounding out the Final 4!    Congrats to Brian for taking the top qualifier prize and thanks for the scorekeeping during the late night rush!   It was a really fun tourney!

Thanks to Rob McDole for the Tin Star.    A very rare Taito game you just don't see very often, and a lot of fun!

Besides seeing the Kong Off crowd, it was a great surprise to see Mr CAX walk up while Eve and I are playing Banzai Run to say hi.    I had to stare for a second.... Scott Evans?  What are you doing here??  LOL it was funny.    He said it was a last minute decision to fly out Thurs night and check out the show and bring his family to the attractions.    We also had fun torturing Jon Exidy about the Tin Star sale, before letting him off the hook the next day.

Another fun memory was Doug Titus trying to get to the top of ICB, and doing 8 and above with a mini-crowd watching.   He had it in 10 and it rolled right under it, a collective OHHHAWWWW! from the crowd!  Eve made it to 5, which I was impressed with!   She wants an ICB now... (sigh!).

Thanks to Ron for taking us out to the Brazilian Steak House, that was a great experience for a carnivore after being on a smoothie binge lately!  Thanks so much my friend!

More as I have time and remember... gotta run to work...

Thanks!

Despite finishing as the Super Grover of the Finals, I was actually quite pleased with my results.  In the past I have had a trend of qualifying high and often not even making the finals.  I have made the final 4 in my last 3 of 3 events (LSOG, Point Monsters, GW) so I view it as massive progress for me!

I was talking with Dominy about the whole "woulda coulda shoulda" aspect of the tourney.   There are so many cases where any of us can say "if I had only..."

I can think of 3 distinct things for me in the qualifying run:  a) If I had not tilted away my 50K bonus on ASM, b) if I collected the TWO OTHER 1MIL shots I missed in my 3.7 TM game , c) and if I had collected practically anything on MET, that could have changed things.

BUT, everyone else could do the same thing. I really don't dwell on it because I saw so many cases where scores could easily change around. That is what makes it interesting. I know Brian had his own WTH just happened with his JB score.  In the end it did not affect his top qualifying spot, but it just goes to show all types of weird things can happen. (And yes, big congrats to BCD!)

I was proud of my semi-finals run and wish I could have repeated it. My first ball on JB was the deal clincher. I loved the golf clap from the crowd.

The finals were a bit embarassing for me.  Time Machine was comical. When the high score is 285k, all you can do is laugh, unfortunately my 99k was the worst of the lot. On game 2, I had chances on Avatar, but failed to execute and by game 3 on JB I was just done. No excuses from me, I just did not play well that round.

I think it is awesome that the St. Augustine crew is in the mix and that you helped introduce them to the fun.  You guys (and girls) play great and it is fun to play with you all.  I feel the same way about our FLiPS group.  More and more FLiPS players have gotten the "tourney bug" because it really is more fun to compete.  I think FLiPS inspired some other people as well with our casual, fun, but sometimes semi-serious tourney approach to get their feet wet.

Yes, Danny C. cracks me up.  Atticus said "Danny is even more relaxed than I am" which says a lot!  Danny is a good player, no doubt.  I am glad a Florida player at least took one of the top 2 spots from the heavies.  It was a tough group all around this year. So many good players fighting for those limited 16 spots, let alone the top 4.

Glad to hear you are still having fun, Jason. Hope to see you at SPF!

I would like to say THANK YOU and everyone who came out to the show, it was great to see everyone having fun, i did not get much chance to sneak out and say hello, as spent most of all day Saturday running the Twin Galaxy Record Breaking area ( as Mick got sucked over into the Panel room) , and Sunday doing the Stern Launch Party.

My Apologies for the MC Rapper PA System over the Tournament area, Next time, Donny will have full control over PA Volume and MUTE Control, good thing the speaker over there was NEVER plugged in, I will refrain from making any "extra" comments on it.. I do think my PA System did work out great, and does require a little some skills to not be obnoxious on it.

Also, I would like to give a BIG HUGE Thank you to all the guys who helped Donny, as I basically ran the "Stern Launch Party" by myself (with help from Bill mcVey, Donald B, and Curly also well ), and i tell you what! That is crazy to keep track of, I enjoyed it, and think I want to do these little things at many other events, as that was fun and a blast! ( i will need to develop some good software to do it. )

here is the complete score break down, who played on what machine, and what position they played. ( if i spelled someone's name wrong, my apologies, i am not so good at hearing )

1st Jason Werdrick (Ranked 41 in the world)

2nd Danny Conlin (Defending GW pinball champ)

3rd Maka Honig (Ranked 82 in the world)

4th Jeff Palmer (Super Grover of the finals LOL)

Very strong qualifying group this year.  50+ great players cannot all make the top 16 let alone the final 4.

I am sure the official results will come out soon.

www.lefkoff.com/ape/ will give some details as well.

Florida competitive pinball keeps getting better.

It seemed like Gamewarp put more of an emphasis on video games and consoles this year.  I don't remember Halo tournaments last year?  Anyway it is a good idea and sets this show apart from the other Florida shows.   It just goes to show that all three shows have their own personality and all three can coexist and compliment each other.  For next year I'd like to see more non-video or pinball arcade games.  That shooting gallery game with the tank in it was cool.  To bad it was not functioning properly.  I am in the market for EM arcade games like that now, so maybe I can bring one next year.

the EM was fixed late Saturday? and works fully now, well, not now as the handle is broke, but i should be able to fix it, its Mick's EM, we picked it up a week or two before the show.

We had someone come in and do the console tournament, just like how Donny handle's the Pinball Tournament, Kieth handles the Arcade Tournament, sometimes its just easier to have someone else handle a portion of the show they are good at.

I over extended myself with the TG Arcade Records, and the Stern Launch Party, sometimes you just can't do everything yourself :(
